Two for Tuesday…
Written by Call of Duty Endowment on March 30, 2010 – 8:59 am -Just over four months ago we launched this organization to help raise awareness for the grave issue of veterans’ unemployment. As the new figures from the Department of Labor show, it’s a problem that appears to be getting worse for our youngest veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Clearly, there’s a great deal of work that needs to be done: More employers need to step up and seek out veterans for their open positions; More organizations need to help match veterans with these ideal employers; and More Americans need to be made aware of this issue.
But step by step, month by month, we hope that we are meeting the mission we set out to do last November. This Tuesday, we announced a new grant of $50,000 to support the Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD), a nationally recognized organization that helps provide shelter, job training and employment services to homeless veterans in the San Diego area. We also highlighted today, an event aboard the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) where the Call of Duty endowment delivered over $180,000 worth of Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 2 games to the U.S. Navy. Copies of Activision’s blockbuster game were presented to sailors by actor Rob Corddry and CODE’s advisory council member Rear Adm. Ronne Froman, USN Ret., during a special event aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) in San Diego, CA. The games will be distributed to over 300 ships and submarines, as well as Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities around the world.
With the addition of this VVSD grant and visiting our sailors on the USS Stennis, we hope that CODE will continue to increase awareness for the unemployment situation facing veterans and help them find the rewarding careers they deserve. They gave their lives to protect our country, and we must return their service with the fruitful benefit of 21st century jobs.
