This Week: National Attention Focuses on Veteran Employment Efforts
Written by admin on March 30, 2012 – 5:14 pm -There has been some much-needed attention to the issue of veteran unemployment this week from MSNBC News, the Call of Duty Endowment, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and government entities.
On Tuesday, Advisory Council member Lisa Rosser was featured in an MSNBC article and video interview titled “Veterans find work at ‘Hiring our Heroes’ job fairs.” In addition to consulting a Call of Duty Endowment representative, the article highlights the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring our Heroes job fairs, which the Endowment announced a partnership with last Fall.
In advocating for the hiring of a veteran as a good business investment, Rosser explains that “the military person has the skill sets you need…Eighty-one percent of the jobs fit what you have in your organization, and the other skills that we bring are managerial and operational and training and leadership experience. What employer doesn’t need those types of skills in their workplace?”
In addition to these efforts, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis joined members of the Senate Veterans Jobs Caucus this week for an event to kick off their ‘I Hire Veterans,’ which is an “initiative to encourage members of the Senate and the public to show their commitment to hiring veterans by displaying a simple logo in their offices and businesses.”
It is encouraging to see some many different sectors working together to accomplish a goal which we all believe to be of the utmost importance- our veterans are smart and valuable employees who deserve support and opportunities for success in a civilian workplace.

Avoiding the ‘Lost in Translation’ Moment
Written by admin on January 23, 2012 – 4:47 pm -For veterans returning to the civilian workplace it is important to translate military-specific skill sets into language that translates to the civilian world. The civilian market for ‘fire direction control’ is limited to say the least. But, the market for experienced candidates accustomed to working under deadlines in high-pressure environments is enormous.
Several pieces out this week (here and here) emphasize the importance of avoiding lost in translation moments when veterans are putting their resumes together. As one vet puts it, “When it came time to put together a resume, I had to learn to pull out the things that didn’t pertain. You know, like blowing things up.”
For veterans working on resumes now, explore services available to you. A blog with some helpful tips is posted here. Several organization hosting job fairs for veterans also provide resume writing and interview prep services. For example, Hire Heroes USA provides a comprehensive set of tools here.

Upcoming Job Fairs and Help for Vet-Owned Businesses
Written by admin on January 17, 2012 – 2:46 pm -In the coming weeks, several organizations will be hosting job fairs for veterans and military spouses. One of the leading organizations sponsoring hiring fairs across the county is RecruitMilitary. So far, the organization has scheduled over 50 free hiring fairs across the country, including two events on January 26th (Las Vegas, NV & Nashville, TN).
The US Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring our Heroes Job Fairs also continue in 2012, with three events remaining in January (Knoxville, TN on 1/24 and Alexandria, LA and Longmont, CO on 1/26). Click here for a full list of scheduled events.
In addition to Veterans and their families looking for work, there may be positive news for Veteran owned businesses as well. The Wall Street Journal reports that more states are implementing processes to allocate state and local contracts to veteran owned businesses. 23 states currently offer some type of preferential contracting process for veteran-owned businesses and legislation is moving in many more.
If veteran-businesses are able to secure even a small portion of state and local contracts, it can mean bug business. For example, the WSJ piece reports that, “Between July 2009 and July 2010, California spent $213 million on businesses owned by disabled veterans, or around 3.7% of the state’s $5.8 billion procurement budget.”
In a difficult economy, many veterans are opening their own businesses. State and local governments will be well served in forging partnerships with these leaders and entrepreneurs.

New Tool for Vets – The Virtual Job Fair
Written by admin on November 1, 2011 – 10:05 pm -The job fair is perhaps the central event for many job seekers and employers. They provide employers access to a large field of potential applicants, and allow those looking for work to explore multiple options and careers. But in today’s tough economic climate, job fairs can sometimes come with logistical challenges. Travel, parking, crowds and others issues can be frustrating, and may even create barriers to entry for some.
One solution many employers have found, going online. Online job fairs provide employers a way to overcome challenges sometimes associated with brick and mortar job fairs. Luckily for veterans, the organization Milicruit.com is taking advantage of this trend to create new tools to help veterans and military families find work.
Milicruit was founded to provide an online forum for veterans seeking employment and employers seeking to hire veterans to meet and interact in online. Through their “virtual recruitment center,” Milicruit is hosting a series of online job fairs that allow veterans to visit employer booths, view and apply for jobs, and chat and email directly with recruiters and hiring managers, all from the comfort of their home or office. According to Milicruit, employers say these online forums can save time and money, as well as broaden the candidate pool.
Milicruit’s next online career fair for veterans and military spouses is scheduled for November 10th, and is hosted in partnership with Joining Forces. Over 70 Fortune 1,000 employers and government agencies are registered to participate, and over 27,000 soldiers, veterans, and military spouses have registered to attend. If you are a veteran or military spouse seeking work, or an employer looking to hire veterans, go to http://www.veteranscareerfair.com to register.
The Internet continues to provide new and exciting resources for Veterans. Click the following links for more examples of how companies are leveraging the power of the internet from The Wall Street Journal and MarketWatch.

Stand Down 2011 and Milicruit’s Sept. 12th Career Fair Show both Local and National Support for our Veterans
Written by admin on August 29, 2011 – 1:57 pm -Both local and national efforts are underway to get our veterans back to work. The Connecticut Department of Labor’s Office for Veterans’ Workforce Development and Milicruit are hosting their own job fairs the weekend of September 9th. What are already looking to be two great events, these combined events will offer our veterans opportunities to meet and speak with over 140 employers, federal agencies, and private organizations.
Republican American explains that Stand Down 2011, the job fair hosted by Connecticut’s Department of Labor’s Office for Veterans’ Workforce Development, is an annual one-day outreach and support event for those veterans who are homeless, unemployed, or have medical conditions. With last year’s outstanding attendance of 1,300 veterans, this year’s event hopes to do even better, with more than 50 participating organizations and agencies.
The event will take place on Friday, September 9th, from 7am to 3pm. For more information, such as veteran registration, please click here.
Milicruit, a provider of virtual career fairs for veterans, will host its national event that same weekend, on Sunday, September 12th for veterans and military spouses. More than 90 Fortune 500 companies are expected to participate, including CitiBank and Waste Management.
In partnering with Milicruit, CitiBank has promised to hire as many as 500 veterans over the next 12 months. Similarly, Wes Reel, a representative from Waste Management explains that, “Waste Management hires a veteran every day of the year and one in twelve of our employees is a veteran. Our Milicruit partner plays a big role in helping us attract quality talent.”
The Call of Duty Endowment believes that it is important to offer our veterans as much support as possible when trying to find employment, and offering opportunities both on the local and national level are signs that our nation is beginning to do just that.

Call of Duty Endowment’s Response to the Olympian: We hear you!
Written by admin on August 15, 2011 – 4:27 pm -Today (8/15), the Washington Newspaper the Olympian published a great Op-Ed, “Public and private sectors must help those leaving military.” Click the link to read the full text, but the theme is evident from the title. Bravo to the folks at the Olympian for addressing the issue of Veterans unemployment! We couldn’t agree more on the pressing nature of this issue and the absolute necessity for cooperation between both the public and private sectors.
As noted in the piece, President Obama’s address last week and the public initiatives he announced are a great start to the process of helping our returning veterans. The Olympian piece also mentions the work being done in the private sector. Along those lines, also in today’s news is a new website, “NowHiringVeterans.com.” Created by a Virginia Beach based company called Intellect-Techs, the website allows veteran job seekers to post resumes and companies specifically seeking vets and wounded warriors to post job openings. The venture provides a great forum for employers and veterans looking for work to connect.
The Olympian also mentions Microsoft’s commitment to the cause. Microsoft is a leader on this issue. In fact, they recently donated $250,000 in cash and software to help our organization find jobs for our vets. The US Chamber of Commerce is another leading advocate for veterans in the private sector, sponsoring “Hiring our Heroes” Job Fairs all across the country.
Another group working tirelessly to help veterans is the non-profit sector. At the Call of Duty Endowment we work with organizations all across the country to help veterans find jobs. Organizations like Veterans Green Jobs, Military to Medicine, Hire Heroes USA, Helmets to Hardhats and many more. Click here for a detailed list of groups working to help veterans.
Non-profit groups working directly with veterans in the communities where they live are critical to getting vets transitioned to civilian lives. These organizations need support from the public and from private industry.
That is why Activision Blizzard launched the Call of Duty Endowment in October 2009, with a commitment to donate and raise millions of dollars for the cause. Led by CEO Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard realized the importance of the private sector and endowed CODE with the mission to create a national campaign that will assist those organizations that provide our former service members with job placement, training and educational services in their post military careers.
A big part of what we do is try to raise awareness, and every new website and op-ed or feature story from folks like the Olympian helps to raise public awareness of this issue. So we just wanted to say thanks, and keep up the great reporting.
