Written by Call of Duty Endowment on May 10, 2011 – 10:48 am -

Today is a big day for the Call of Duty Endowment—the Facebook page just hit 100,000 fans! Since the Call of Duty Endowment launched in 2009, it has been our mission to fight the soaring unemployment levels veterans experience. In order to keep the public aware of this pressing issue and up-to-date on what the Endowment is doing to help, we entered the social media world. By using Twitter and Facebook we have been able to reach the masses in a huge way. With your support, we have been able to help veterans gain worthy employment and ease the struggle many face when transitioning back to civilian life.

Currently, there are more than one million veterans who are out of work in the country and unemployment levels for veterans far exceed those who are not veterans. Showing your support for our veterans is a great first step, but more needs to be done.  Take a look at the rest of the Call of Duty Endowment website for ways you can help our beloved heroes.

Thanks for all of the support, we couldn’t have done this great work without you! Be sure to check out our new video below to mark this momentous occasion.

Iraq Veteran Leads Maryland’s Web-Portal Initiative

Written by Call of Duty Endowment on April 28, 2011 – 2:24 pm -

As the Call of Duty Endowment has stressed before, many veterans struggle when translating their military skills into a civilian work setting.  When veterans return from abroad, they look forward to a smooth transition back to civilian life.  One of the first places returning service members look to is the USA Jobs website to initially find federal employment.  The site is sometimes overwhelming with is thousands of job postings.  To assist with navigating the site and creating a better match to jobs, a new web-portal created by the State of Maryland is called Mil2FedJobs was recently launched.

The one-of-a-kind website was introduced by a veteran who is the nations highest-ranking elected official. Maryland’s Lt. Governor Anthony Brown (US Army Reserve) announced the transitioning website this week.  The site will help match veteran’s skill sets to federal job listings. Veterans can type in the branch of service they were a part of and their occupation job or title to narrow job postings that require those skills.

“It’s our duty to serve those who have so bravely served their country, and the innovative Mil2FedJobs site is one more way to ensure that Maryland’s veterans have the support they deserve,” said Lt. Governor Brown during the official site launch at Prince George’s Community College.

The new website is a good tool for veterans to help translate skills and look for the types of careers they are qualified for.  It is also helpful for employers to learn how to relate a veteran’s military experience into specific job skills.  So if you’re a veteran and want to find a federal job that is right for you or if you’re an employer and want to learn more about veteran’s skill sets, this is the site for you!

Activision recently supported a great initiative started by the US Chamber of Commerce by donating $10,000 in the name of the Call of Duty Endowment. Last week, the Call of Duty Endowment saw firsthand the effects of the donation by traveling to Chicago as a key sponsor of the official kick off for the US Chamber of Commerce’s veteran’s career fairs. The Chamber has committed to hosting 100 job fairs for veterans and their spouses across the country. There were over 100 companies in attendance and over 1,000 veterans walked through the doors during this one day event. Throughout the day, the Call of Duty Endowment had a chance to talk to some veterans and even employers about the reasons veterans are great assets to any company team.  Watch the video below to hear what they had to say!

Antarctica Runner Raises Money For Call of Duty Endowment

Written by Call of Duty Endowment on March 28, 2011 – 10:07 am -

Antarctica is not typically the destination of choice when running a marathon. But the icy and frigid weather of the globe’s coldest continent didn’t stand in the way of one running enthusiast. Laird Malamed, Senior Vice President of Development at Activision, recently took his love of running to The White Continent of Antarctica to compete in a 26.2 mile trek across the snow and ice.

You may remember Laird from a post last year when he ran the Adelaide marathon in Australia.

The contributions Laird received from his run across Antarctica were donated to three charities and organizations, including the Call of Duty Endowment.

Laird is very familiar with the work of the Call of Duty Endowment and our effort to help veterans train for and find meaningful careers. Every penny we receive from contributions will be put towards easing the difficult transition veterans face when re-entering the civilian world. We thank Laird for all of his support and wish him luck on many more running adventures.

For more on Laird’s amazing marathon in Antarctica, be sure to check out his website, Run Laird Run.

The Call of Duty Endowment Awards $100,000 to Military to Medicine

Written by Call of Duty Endowment on March 18, 2011 – 2:30 pm -

The healthcare field is an area that continues to grow and expand. With plenty of areas to explore, healthcare careers are a great choice for returning veterans. One organization that realizes the potential and career opportunities available for veterans is Military to Medicine. The organization is a national program with online courses that train veterans in a number of areas in the medical field and was recently selected to receive a $100,000 grant from the Call of Duty Endowment.

The grant funding received by the Call of Duty Endowment will allow Military to Medicine to develop fundamental training capabilities in patient care and clinical support occupations. The funding will specifically go towards the development of a pilot program that will certify veterans in medical assisting. The new program is important because medical assisting is a keystone requirement leading to future career opportunities in nursing and allied health.

To hear more on this program and the importance of this grant, check out the video below with Dan Nichols, Executive Director for Military to Medicine.

Congratulations to all of the Call of Duty Endowment’s first grant recipients of 2011!

The Call of Duty Endowment Awards $100,000 to Veterans Green Jobs

Written by Call of Duty Endowment on March 17, 2011 – 2:38 pm -

It’s Saint Patrick’s Day and most of the nation will be embracing their inner Irish heritage and wearing the color green today. One organization that wears green quite well is Veterans Green Jobs, recipient of a $100,000 grant from the Call of Duty Endowment. The green friendly organization connects military veterans with meaningful employment opportunities that serve the community and the environment.

The grant funding received by the Call of Duty Endowment will be used to fund Veterans Green Jobs’ “Vet Force” program. The program will network with employers to develop job needs and skill sets required for each position and train veterans in the program accordingly. Veterans Green Jobs will then link veterans in the program to employers who have committed to hiring veterans in the green sector.

For more information on why green is important to veterans year round, check out the interview below with Bill Doe, CEO of Veterans Green Jobs. Tomorrow we end the week with Military to Medicine, stay tuned!

CODE and Activision Make an Educational Investment in Veterans…

Written by Call of Duty Endowment on May 11, 2010 – 11:16 am -

Today the Call of Duty Endowment and Activision are announcing the creation of a new scholarship program to assist those veterans pursuing a career in videogame development at Austin Community College (ACC) and Madison Area Technical College (MATC).  The program will assist veterans at these schools with the costs of software, transportation, and other educational needs, while the GI bill covers tuition costs for U.S. veterans at most schools.  ACC and MATC were chosen by CODE and Activision because of their gaming and illustration programs, as well as the high number of veterans’ enrolled at each school and the participation of military veterans in the relevant course work.

The scholarships will help to fulfill CODE’s mission of ensuring that veterans are provided a clear path to new careers after their military service is complete.  Recognizing that our nation’s veterans are some of the brightest and hardest working individuals our nation has to offer, the Call of Duty Endowment and Activision wanted to encourage and help create a path for more of these men and women to enter the field of video game production.

Applications are now being accepted at both schools for students looking to pursue the scholarship, with the initial scholarship recipients to be announced in August.  The Call of Duty Endowment and Activision will track the development of the scholarship winners through the CODE website and other mediums as they progress throughout the program.  In total, CODE will donate $100,000 to fund the scholarship programs, which will exist for at least five years at each school.

To apply or learn more about  the scholarships at MATC, click here.

Those individuals that have put their lives on the line to protect our country deserve to be rewarded with 21st century careers.  These scholarships will help them get there!
